Agreement for the creation and development of the Maritime-Port Chair of the ULPGC.

On Friday, January 10, 2020, at 11 am, in the April 26 Room of the Institutional Headquarters of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (c / Juan de Quesada, 30. Vegueta), the presentation ceremony took place of the agreement between the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the Port Authority of Las Palmas, the Mapfre Guanarteme Foundation and Astilleros Canarios SA (Astican) for the creation and development of the Maritime-Port Chair, whose objective is the promotion and dissemination of research in maritime activities, ports and maritime transport.

Present at this event were the Rector of the ULPGC, Rafael Robaina; the President of the Port Authority, Luis Ibarra; the Astican board of directors, Ana Suárez; and the patron of Fundación MAPFRE Guanarteme, Alfredo Montes.

The direction of the Chair corresponds to Dr. Lourdes Trujillo Castellano, Professor of the Department of Economic Analysis of the ULPGC and will have two deputy directors: The Deputy Director of the Engineering part will be Dr. Alba Martínez López, hired Doctor of the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the ULPGC; and the Deputy Director of the Economics part will be Doctor Casiano Manrique de Lara Peñate, hired Doctor of the Department of Applied Economic Analysis of the ULPGC.

In order to carry out the activities of the Chair, each of the parties –Port Authority, Fundación MAPFRE Guanarteme and ASTICAN– undertakes to provide it annually, and during the term of this agreement, with the amount of ten thousand euros, which will be managed through the Fundación Canaria Parque Científico y Tecnológico.

The planned program of activities to be developed by the Chair during 2020 will be very broad and includes, among others, the following activities: Conference on current challenges in the port sector, research projects related to connectivity, port efficiency and route optimization or the special registry of ships of the Canary Islands; preparation of computer tools for data analysis related to ship movements or port statistics; attendance at conferences and publications.
